PAR and the League of Women Voters Release 2004 Voters’ Guide

Posted: 10/21/2004

The Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana, Inc. (PAR), in conjunction with the League of Women Voters, today released the 2004 Voters’ Guide to the November 2 election. The 12-page Guide provides voters with information about each of the presidential and congressional candidates as well as a voter checklist for the four proposed constitutional amendments.

The Guide includes detailed responses to questions posed to each of the presidential and Senate candidates regarding major issues of special concern to Louisiana citizens. The questions focus on healthcare, education, homeland security, crime, military base closures and funding for coastal restoration.

Voters are encouraged to bring a copy of the voter checklist with them when they go to the polls. The checklist briefly describes each of the proposed amendments to the state constitution and explains the meaning of a vote for or against. The four proposals address a right to hunt, fish and trap; the homestead exemption; veterans’ preference for public employment; and an agricultural and seafood fund. A more detailed analysis of the proposed amendments can be found on PAR’s Web site at: www.la-par.org.

Biographical information for the each of the House of Representative candidates, along with a map of the congressional districts, is also provided. Other helpful information appearing in the Guide includes: a list of contact information for parish registrars of voters; Web site addresses for various state governmental agencies; voting dates for absentee voters and for the general and run-off elections; and voter registration qualifications.

The Guide has been distributed statewide through the state’s library system and will appear as an insert in the Thursday, October 28 edition of The Advocate. However, voters are also encouraged to download a free, online (PDF) version of the Guide from PAR’s Web site at: www.la-par.org/Publications/PDF/2004VotersGuide.pdf. For additional information, write to PAR at P.O. Box 14776, Baton Rouge, LA 70898-4776 or call (225) 926-8414.
